Michelangelo’s “Funky” Goal Setting Advice

Don’t mean to get all touchy-feely but…

…I’m a flat out “quote junky” and I had to share a gem with you:

“The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.” ~Michelangelo (the Italian Renaissance artist, not the Ninja Turtle FYI)

Couldn’t have said it better myself Mikey.

Let me ask you an important question:

Are your goals unreasonable?

If not I highly suggest you make them unreasonable.

Why?

The reason I’m saying this is because all of the super successful people I know have “unreasonable” goals.

(at least they appear that way to most people).

They don’t just want to “make money.”

They have a specific, detailed vision of what they want to do…and more importantly…

They know how their goal will help other people.

In the end, that’s what it’s all about.

Helping OTHER people.

Not just making a quick buck.

I’m not saying that making money for the sake of it is bad.

Hellz no.

Me loves gettin’ some dinero. What I am saying is that you stand a far better chance of getting what you want (& helping other people along the way) if you make your goal LARGER than yourself.

A few more pointers:

*1.) Make your goal specific, tangible and measurable.

*2.) Break up your larger goal into bite-sized chunks.

*3.) Write your goal down.

*4.) Be grateful for what you have now.

The last one is something that most “gurus” leave out.

Why?

Because if you’re happy with your life NOW, there’s no need to buy their stuff!

The truth of the matter is this…

Everything will be fine, whether or not you get your goal.

In fact, detaching from your goal will actually help you get it.

Odd?

Totally. In fact it’s the complete opposite of what you see in hyped up movies like “The Secret.” Imagine this…

You’re trying to land a deal with a client.

The client has narrowed down their selection to just 2 candidates, and you’re one of them.

Unlike your competition, you’re desperate for a job.

You needed this job…like…yesterday. On the other hand, the other candidate could care less if they landed the job. It’d be nice to have a new client, but there’s no pressing need for it.

Who would you hire?

The desperate, down-on-their-knees candidate or…

The cool, calm, and confident (detached) candidate.

Same goes in relationships and just about every other area of our lives. Believe it or not: desire is actually holding you back. So, be okay with NOT getting your goal. Be grateful for what you have in this moment.

Alright — I’ve fulfilled my quota for going all “woo-woo” for this month.

If you want to know more about this whole desire vs. goals debate check out one of my latest additions to my Toolbox page.

It’s a book called The Sedona Method.

I use The Sedona Method training (books & audio) in some for EVERY day.

I cannot recommend it enough.
